JOÃO PIMENTA GOMES

João Pimenta Gomes (born in Lisbon, 1989) is a visual artist and musician who lives and works in Lisbon. In his artistic practice, he explores references mainly related to music and delves into the relationships between space and the body through the manipulation of modular synthesizers, images, videos, and objects, creating encounters between the analog and the digital, the sensory and the conceptual. His work also falls within the realm of performance, where the artist expands these relationships and encounters, involving the viewer as well. When viewers interact with his pieces, they observe the process of creating the musical idea, making the body – in its approach, distance, mutation, or shaping – a fundamental element of its existence.

Some of his notable exhibitions include the group exhibition Esfíngico Frontal (Curated by Germano Dushá), Mendes Wood DM Gallery, São Paulo, Brazil, 2023; Poly-Free, MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology, Lisbon, 2022; Clouds, Kunstraum Botschaft, Berlin, 2021; Trabalho de Inverno, Quadrado Azul Gallery, Lisbon, 2021, as a member of the group Matéria Simples, with whom he also created A Ilha de Calipso, Appleton Garage, Lisbon, 2020; and Micro Ressonâncias (Appleton Box, Lisbon, 2020). Among his recent performances, notable ones include Glissando II, Mendes Wood DM Gallery, São Paulo, Brazil, 2023; Poly Free – Reamping, MAAT, Lisbon, 2022; Alto Mar / Metavox, Palácio Nacional de Belém, Lisbon, 2022; Doppelganger III, Sound & Future, Plataforma Revólver, Lisbon, 2022; Doppelganger VII, Lux Frágil, Lisbon, 2022.

Tâmaras by MATÉRIA SIMPLES | 19h00

Tâmaras” is the name of the performative piece by the artist group MATÉRIA SIMPLES, in residence between March and April, centered around seven variations of the ancient instrument, Sistrum.

The performative piece, which was the central work of this residency period at OSSO, revives the sound of these ancient instruments, articulating them in brief polyrhythmic cycles on the threshold of music and acoustic experience. These cycles overlap and shimmer over another sonic space with a different density and quality (pre-recorded sounds, violin, mellotron, synthesizer, etc.). Thus, two sonic movements converge.

MATÉRIA SIMPLES:
Catarina Silva: Sistrum Construction.
David Maranha: Violin, Sistrum, Recordings
João Pimenta Gomes: Mellotron, Sistrum.
Pedro Tropa: Sistrum, Synthesizer, and Recordings.
Teresa Santos: Sistrum, Recordings, and Photographic Projection.

Tabula Sonorum | 21h00

Tabula Sonorum Duo
Bart van Dongen – piano
Gonçalo Almeida– Double Bass

Portuguese double bassist Gonçalo Almeida, based in the Netherlands, joins forces with Dutch pianist Bart van Dongen to form the duo Tabula Sonorum. In this project, where improvised music is strongly influenced by minimalism, the piano and double bass are explored through a wide range of preparations, challenging the conventional use of the instruments and creating a highly distinctive musical sequence, almost hypnotic in nature.
