RÁDIO ANTECÂMARA

Garagem Sul, Centro Cultural de Belém, 2022

ANTECÂMARA is a project for the creation and cultural programming managed by the ASSOCIAÇÃO ANTEC MARA. It serves as a think tank where various reflections and events converge, including conversations, exhibitions, workshops, performances, publications, and more. Starting from architecture, ANTECÂMARA explores various forms of visual and spatial art, promoting critical thinking and interdisciplinary intersections.

ANTECÂMARA aims to promote, disseminate, create, and discuss topics related to architecture, the city, and territory, always considering the cultural dimension of the discipline, particularly its social and human aspects. In a communal and inclusive approach, ANTECÂMARA acts as a gathering point for architecture professionals and as a space that brings the local community together.

Among the means of dissemination for ANTECÂMARA is a gallery and a radio station. The programming at GALERIA ANTECÂMARA includes various formats such as exhibitions, workshops, discussions, events, dedicated cycles, etc., involving participants from various fields, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to architecture. The gallery places a strong emphasis on engaging with public spaces near the gallery and involving residents from the neighborhood and beyond in Antecâmara’s activities.

RÁDIO ANTECÂMARA combines interdisciplinary exploration with a focus on addressing contemporary societal issues. It fosters the creation and research of new contemporary discourses through podcast broadcasts. With nearly three years of content related to architecture, RÁDIO ANTECÂMARA has produced 25 programs, 244 episodes, garnered over 150,000 clicks, and logged around 500 hours of broadcast time, featuring more than 30 authors and numerous guests. In 2022, it conducted a six-month residency at Garagem Sul/CCB, resulting in the exhibition “Sound it. Rádio Antecâmara,” featuring a sound installation by João Galante. The residency continued to explore the discipline of architecture in a comprehensive and cross-cutting way with a weekly program consisting of 50 episodes and 150 guests. RÁDIO ANTECÂMARA also partners with podcasts in the Público network. With two weekly episodes (39 already broadcasted), Antecâmara/P3 brings together the most significant episodes from the radio and a selection of those broadcasted on Sound It.

The headquarters of ASSOCIAÇÃO ANTECÂMARA is located in an old bakery and bread factory (about 250m2) in the Anjos neighborhood of Lisbon. The former bakery’s entrance, a sales space, is GALERIA ANTECÂMARA (30m2), featuring two large street-facing windows (Rua de Cabo Verde and Rua de Macau). The adjacent room (50m2) is a flexible space for training, meetings, and rehearsals. Two old ovens (50m2) with large brick domes have been transformed into a recording studio for RÁDIO ANTECÂMARA. The remaining space is dedicated to the artistic team, administration, production, and also serves as the workspace for the CCA architecture studio.

The program developed by ASSOCIAÇÃO ANTECÂMARA has been recognized by various institutions with which collaborative projects have been established. These include the Junta da Freguesia de Arroios, Prata da Casa, Trienal de Arquitetura de Lisboa, and the Direção Geral das Artes, which provided support for specific projects. It’s also worth mentioning the aforementioned invitation from CCB_Centro Cultural de Belém for organizing the exhibition that accompanied Rádio Antecâmara’s six-month residency at Garagem Sul.
