ECHOES#1 _ 12 – 14 JULY 2013

What´s the influence of Soundscapes on our daily lives? Since we are responsible for most of the noise emission of the spaces we inhabit, how do we think and “design” the soundscape of our city?

The meeting point is at Sinel de Cordes palace (home of Lisbon Architecture Triennale). In the afternoon the sound artist / musician Carlos Santos proposes a workshop on aural territories. In the evening we watch the films “Listen” by David New and “the Conversation” by Francis Ford Coppola. Also on Friday, we will be able to listen to the results of the 1st OPEN CALL radio programmed by artist / editor Paulo Raposo and we open the gardens of the palace for a party.

The first weekend ECOS invites us to think about Lisbon’s soundscapes by taking a tug boat ride through the river Tagus until the center of the bridge 25 de Abril. On sunday at Panteão Nacional, musicians Ernesto Rodrigues (viola), Bertrand Gauguet (saxophone) and Ricardo Guerreiro (electronic), will explore the symbolic and accoustic characteristics of the monument through musical improvisation “near silence”.

To follow live or through radio Stress.fm., a conversation between all the guests moderated by the investigator and director Raquel Castro takes place on Saturday after the soundwalk in the river Tagus.

Director / David New

“A soundscape is any collection of sounds, almost like a painting is a collection of visual attractions,” says composer R. Murray Schafer. “When you listen carefully to the soundscape it becomes quite miraculous.” David New’s portrait of the renowned composer becomes a lesson unto itself, gracing viewers (and listeners) with a singular moment of interactive subjectivity. This film was produced for the 2009 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

“The TRA$H Converters duo, Miguel Sá and Fernando Fadigas, has fun recycling Pop Trash by means of saturated electronics and everyone rocks to it.” – Vitor Belanciano in Y, Público.

“Miguel and Fernando, the Batman and Robin of Portuguese electronica? Well that’s the abiding memory of this swashbuckling duo who made their Dublin debut performances. […] From small steps to leaps and bounds. This is the beginning. ” – Michael McDermott, A Dublin Odyssey.

While hearing is just an act of detecting a certain sound, listening reffers to a state of active attention and reaction to the meaning a sound may contain. Listening is an active complement of hearing. It is the way to process the sonic information which is potentially meaningful to the brain. Therefore it is through listening that we can feel life happenings, share cultural symbols, stimulate emotions, effectively communicate, build up social relations, experience time’s movement and retain memory of the experiences.

Soundscapes are therefore demonstrations of rythmic sistems based on time-space dimensions, essentials to the sound world. Those who pretend to think carefully about this shall keep their ears wide open not only for words, speeches or noises but to listen to a house, a street or a city as a musical composition. A city’s soundscape is as evocative as its smells. Even in silent hours there is always the murmur of a city talking to itself always active.

The soundscapes study embraces such different areas as acoustics, psycoacoustics, otology, audiology, noise reducing practices, communication and soundrecording engineering (electroacoustic and electronic music), aural perception’s pattern and music and speech’s structural analysis. Any of these areas deal with different aspects of soundscape and aims to answer the same questions: “what is the relationship between the man and the surrounding sounds and what happens when these sounds change? Is the world’s soundscape an indeterminate and uncontrollable composition or are we the composers and performers therefore the responsables for its shape and beauty?”

AURAL TERRITORIES by Carlos Santos

“Durante vinte e cinco séculos, o conhecimento ocidental tentou observar o mundo.

OPEN CALL - RADIO PROJECTS / PAULO RAPOSO / “How to get lost and start listening”
radio paulo raposo

“How to get lost and start listening”

“The ear knows this space. I can put the ear on the other side of the window, projecting it great distances, holding it at a great distance from the body. Lost, dissolved in the transparent air, fluctuating with its nuances, sensible of its smallest comas, shivering at the least derision, set free, mingled with the shocks of the world, I exist.” (Michel Serres, Les cinq Sens)

The headquarters of the project and the radio studio is located in the old medieval part of Lisbon giving the motto “How to get lost and start listening”. The surroundings of Alfama, with its intrincate labyrinth of narrow streets, secret passages and unforseen connections, promotes and enhances an experience of disorientation, wandering, walking in circles and ultimately getting lost and disconnected.

Despite the economical and political pressures on urban renewal – this territory invites memory, history, reflection, bringing public and private space to find a tensionless continuum in its constellation of concatenated spaces that fluidly merge the interior and the exterior. Escaping a linear narrative, it is an organic palimpsest where the dispersed and reflected sounds ghostly recirculate and activate new forms of awareness, different perceptual matrixes and spatial coordinates.

This radio project aims to investigate topographies and geographies, social and cultural narratives through poetic imagination, arising the possibility for a deeper commitment with the landscape, the architectural space and the community.

The selected works will be broadcast and streamed by stress.fm between 12 and 14 of July.
