EIRA is a Radio platform designed for artistic residencies. EIRA will be transmitted via FM (89,6 MHz in Aldeia de São Gregório, Caldas da Rainha) and online (www.osso.pt). It will host artistic, training and programming residencies based on radio, its context and its contemporary mutations. EIRA’s function is predominantly laboratorial with a focus on community engagement. The project encourages critical thinking about Territory, a concept OSSO has been exploring over the past years.

EIRA #3: 5th to 19th DECEMBER

EIRA #3 is a temporary project focussed on Radio. The program was transmitted in the village of São Gregório (Caldas da Raínha) and its surroundings and will include, as in the last two editions, live music; talks with São Gregório’s residents and guest artists; workshops and radio projects developed by invited artists and researchers.

Artists, researchers and collectives in residency:
Alunos da ESAD;
Carla Castiajo;
Cláudio de Pina;
Beatriz Cantinho & Túlio Rosa;
Fado Bicha;
Grémio Caldense;
Lantana (Anna Piosik, Carla Santana, Helena Espvall, Joana Guerra, Maria do Mar e Maria Radich);
Martinha Maia;
Preto Mate (Pedro Melo Alves, Joana Guerra e Ricardo Jacinto);
Red Cloud Teatro de Marionetas;
Sonoscopia;
Teresa Luzio;
Victoria Lucas;
Viviana Gonzalez.

In this edition we continued the articulation with some partners of the village, such as the primary school and the social support centre, with which two workshops were held: one dynamised by Red Cloud Teatro de Marionetas and aimed at primary school children, and another proposed by the artist and jeweller Carla Castiajo, to the senior group of the village.

We also started a programming partnership with “O Armário”, a project curated by Benedita Pestana, which in this way extends to the radio space the presence of the artists invited to intervene in the exhibition device which is the Closet. Martinha Maia was the first artist to present a set of sound pieces that, in her case, use voice as the main subject.

Some of the resident collectives were invited to program and conduct some of the evenings of this EIRA, always between 7pm and 11pm. Directly from their remote studios (in Porto, Caldas da Rainha or Lisbon) or from OSSO studios in São Gregório, Sonoscopia, Grémio Caldense, Fado Bicha and Lantana joined us on full broadcast nights with various programming proposals.

Sound Arts students from ESAD‘s Sound and Image course had their space at EIRA. One of the nights will be dedicated to the emission of a set of small sound pieces, corresponding to the students’ answers to the challenge of making pieces specifically for the radio as a sound transmission device (FM and Online).

OSSO Research has proposed that the various residents selected for the Open Call (Beatriz Cantinho & Túlio Rosa, Cláudio de Pina, Tereza Luzio, Victoria Lucas and Viviana Gonzalez) collaborate on this latest edition of EIRA in 2020. This way we had two nights reserved for the emission of sound pieces developed specifically for the EIRA context, as well as conversations between Diogo Alvim and Matilde Meireles and the residents, let us know their artistic and academic paths and how they related their residency proposals with this radio platform.

Preto Mate, a music project that joins the cellos of Joana Guerra and Ricardo Jacinto with the drums and percussion of Pedro Melo Alves, was in residence at OSSO, concentrating on the preparation of a live concert that took place live to EIRA from the Sonoscopia studios in Porto.
