Writing in the Margins
Writing in the Margins was a workshop dedicated to writing—essayistic, journalistic, and critical—about music from the margins and the so-called underground. Given the specificities (in subject, approach, and style) that set it apart from “pop criticism,” the exercises focused precisely on these distinctions, with practical writing sessions pointing toward alternative modes of characterisation.
Particular attention was given to aspects such as: listening in a present synesthetic time; research and networked analysis; historical awareness; shaping ideas of the “new” and the “alternative”; cultivating a counter-current critical stance in relation to established models; and interdisciplinarity as a tool for thinking about music.
