Ricardo Jacinto • Medusa II
Ricardo Jacinto | cello & electronics
Medusa II is a concert-installation recorded in 2014 as the result of an artistic residency by Ricardo Jacinto, invited by Casinfância, a cultural organisation dedicated to artistic experimentation and the development of partnerships and support networks. Jacinto’s artistic proposition is distinctly site-specific, conceived for the former industrial complex União Fabril, now Baía do Tejo.
The installation, entitled Explodido and curated by Cláudia Ramos, combines cello, electronics and other resonant sound objects. Improvisation and experimentalism—key elements throughout Jacinto’s career—are central to this piece as well. Here, improvisation unfolds between the acoustic sound of the cello and the electroacoustic sound diffused through amplified transducers. One of the main explorations, clearly audible on the album, lies in the propagation of resonant waves through the fragments of a metal staircase found on site, articulating notions of fragmentation and dispersion.
This approach investigates the sonic and spatial potential of the environment, weaving together physical structures and produced sounds, and creating a dynamic interaction between the various elements present. Medusa II stands as a striking example of Ricardo Jacinto’s practice, in which improvisation, experimental research and the exploration of surrounding physical elements and their sonic properties converge to shape a unique audio-visual and sound art experience.
