The self-titled album by the quartet Pinkdraft follows a principle of refusing to “corrupt” the stillness of silence through conventional sonic constructions. Instead, it unfolds through timbral and textural procedures—at times arrhythmic, at times polyrhythmic—leaning towards a form of reductionist minimalism. Yet the music reaches remarkable levels of intensity, inevitably tearing through the surface of silence. Here, silence is used less as an absence and more as a coordinate along the path that Pinkdraft has set for its navigation of sound.
Ricardo Jacinto, sound installation artist and mentor of the project, presents here a striking example of new improvisation practices in Portugal, in which influences from art music and contemporary forms intersect, ranging from experimental electronic and electroacoustic music to creative free jazz. These influences shift according to circumstance and moment, but an exploratory stance persists throughout the entire journey.
