Nuno Morão: djembe, tom, bongos, conga, darbouka, floor tom, adufe

Recorded in 2028, this is the first solo album by percussionist Nuno Morão, who is also involved in other musical projects such as The Selva, Medusa Unit, Cacto and Madalena Palmeirim. The album comprises seven tracks that explore a wide range of timbres and polyrhythms, created using a seven-piece membranophone percussion kit.

“Morão’s approach to this percussive journey is centred on a polyrhythmic incursion through torrid, pulsating geographies—congruent with ‘the hot August night’ in which the recording session took place—in which certain rhythmic motifs are repeated with slight variations in tempo, intensity and even form, in progression, now sketching chromatic geometries rich in resonances and angularities, now traversing desert-like expanses where tribes and primordial identities are summoned along the way. A continuous practice of progressive symbiosis with the instrument gives rise both to hypnotic meditations—enchanting even to the most frivolous of minds—and to purgative rituals steeped in voodoo and darker magic.” — João Morado in Beats For Peeps
