INVASOR ABSTRACTO #9 by OSSO colectivo
[with Ricardo Jacinto, Rita Thomaz, Ricardo Vieira]

Invasor Abstracto” is a project dedicated to the circulation of different constellations of members of OSSO colectivo. In each iteration, individual artistic territories intersect along an imagined journey between OSSO’s creative centre—the village of São Gregório (Caldas da Rainha)—and the spaces and communities that host their work. Through this ongoing trajectory, Invasor Abstracto has explored the relationship between art and territory, questioning the aesthetic and political implications of artistic creation in nomadic and temporary contexts.

This ninth and final iteration of the project follows a new geographical and conceptual axis, establishing a dialogue between OSSO’s artistic practice and the Fluxus archive of the Museo Vostell in Malpartida de Cáceres. Drawing on the legacy of the Fluxus movement and the work of Wolf Vostell, the project proposes a reflection on travel and temporary artistic residence as a performative gesture and as a means of expanding a poetic territory.

The route between three places—the physical space of OSSO (São Gregório, Caldas da Rainha), the Museo Vostell (Malpartida de Cáceres) and the Cairn Centre d’Art (Digne-les-Bains) — structures this last appearance of Invasor Abstracto, in which journeys and territorial intersections become raw material for artistic creation.

At each stage of this path, specific physical and cultural traces of each territory are collected and, once overlaid and transformed, compose a hybrid and abstract landscape. Travel and artistic residencies thus act as turning points, giving rise to a series of “poetic essays” that take shape in the temporary occupations of exhibition spaces.

The project culminates in a final presentation at the Museo Vostell, bringing together an installation and performance that offer a sensitive, experimental approach to the intersections between geographies, memories and artistic practices. In each of the residencies—Malpartida, Digne-les-Bains and São Gregório—a small group of artists from OSSO colectivo travelled to the territory, exploring the complementarity of their perspectives and encouraging the sharing of knowledge with local communities.

INVASOR ABSTRACTO #9

Museo Vostell | 26 March – 20 May
: Installation with three works + performance

1. POMAR (Orchard)

Segments of suspended felted wool tubing, natural pigments, lead weights and wire.

Felted wool dyed with pigments extracted from plants gathered in the orchards surrounding OSSO between Autumn 2023 and Autumn 2024, in São Gregório (Caldas da Rainha).

This “device-piece” is the result of an archive of colours and plant fibres drawn from the flora of São Gregório, incorporating into its creative process this raw material as well as the time and procedures involved in its collection, archiving and subsequent transformation. These object-drawings are now drawings of time.

The changing colours of the São Gregório landscape over the course of the year are revealed in chromatic devices presented in dialogue with the architecture of different spaces and the flora of different landscapes.

2. AS ZONAS NUBLADAS (Cloudy Zones)

Three sound pieces broadcast locally via three stereo FM transmitters tuned to 100 MHz, three cassette players and multiple transistor radio headphones.
Note: Please use the transistor radio headphones as you move through the room. Your position in the space will determine which transmission you hear. Seek out the borders.
● Antenna A – The Archive (5:00): Sampling and collage of digitised, previously unpublished sound sources recorded by Wolf Vostell on magnetic tape between 1968 and 1981.
● Antenna B – The Morning (5:00): Sampling and collage of recordings of various streams flowing into the River Bléone in the French Alps, combined with a recording of daybreak in the OSSO orchard in São Gregório (19 May 2023).
● Antenna C – The Loom and the Marksman (5:00): Sampling and collage of recordings of 19th- and 20th-century mechanical looms in operation at Burel Factory, Covilhã, Serra da Estrela, together with recordings of gunshots at a shooting range in Digne-les-Bains.

3. UM PEDAÇO DE REALIDADE (A piece of reality)

Headphones, chair and wall painted black. Binaural recording of a performative action in an exhibition and listening space. (Duration: 3:45)
An original sound performance constructed from field recordings made in Digne-les-Bains and Malpartida.
